American Mahjong Strategy: Tracking, Jokers and Charleston

In American mahjong the card sets your target, but speed and information win: who completes a card hand first, and who tracks the tiles. Three things decide games — tracking, joker choices, Charleston.

About rule differences Overseas variants are defined by associations, clubs or the table itself. This page gives the mainstream version to build a frame and read the jargon; in a real game or tournament, the official or table rules win.

1. Where games are won

Because the card locks your options, American mahjong is not free-form building — it's who completes a fixed hand fastest. Two core skills: speed (get to a win early) and tracking (know whether the tiles you need are left).

2. Tracking: what's gone

Track not 'who discarded what' but how many copies of your key tiles remain. Simplify: track only the 3–4 tile types your current target needs; tracking everything is unmanageable. Continuously judge 'can this hand still complete?' — if not, switch to another card hand.

3. Joker choices

Jokers substitute, except where the card forbids it (certain pairs/singles) — that determines whether a joker fits your hand. Tactically: holding jokers is flexible, but don't delay switching hands just to keep one; needing a joker late is often too late. Rule of thumb: use real tiles rather than gamble on a joker unless the target hand allows it.

4. Charleston passing

The Charleston (right → across → left) is your only chance to organise — don't waste it. Pass lonesome, unconnected tiles; keep tiles that can form pairs/pungs. Jokers may not be passed. If you already have a target hand, pass the tiles blocking it.

5. Pushing vs discard risk

You can win on a discard, so 'what is safe to throw' matters. Use tracking: if a tile is clearly someone's target, don't throw it lightly. Who pays on a discard win varies by table/league — confirm before playing.

Practice checklist

  1. Track only 3–4 key tiles per game.
  2. Decide your Charleston target before passing.
  3. Practise switching hands decisively mid-game.
  4. Save jokers for positions that allow them.
  5. Ask 'who pays on a discard win?' before starting.

FAQ

Is American mahjong luck or skill?
Both. The card fixes your direction, but speed, tracking, Charleston choices and discard safety are all trainable skills.
Do you need to track tiles?
Yes, but not everything — track only the 3–4 tile types your current target needs.
Are more jokers always better?
No. Jokers can't go where the card forbids, and stalling to keep one usually costs more than it gains.
Can you pass jokers in the Charleston?
No, jokers may not be passed. Use the Charleston to send away lonesome tiles and keep connected ones.
