European Mahjong: MCR, OMS and Riichi

In Europe mahjong is played competitively: the two main disciplines are MCR (= the Chinese official rules) and riichi, plus a simplified beginner system called OMS.

About rule differences Overseas variants are defined by associations, clubs or the table itself. This page gives the mainstream version to build a frame and read the jargon; in a real game or tournament, the official or table rules win.

1. Competition, not casual tables

European mahjong is organised by national associations and the EMA, with ratings, rankings and open tournaments. Rules are therefore standardised — you rarely meet the street-by-street variety of China. Two disciplines dominate: MCR and riichi.

2. MCR — the Chinese official rules

MCR is the Chinese official rule set: 144 tiles (8 flowers), 81 fan patterns, 8-fan minimum, 4 players. A winning hand must score at least 8 fan — the opposite of the no-threshold 'win with any shape' style. See our Guobiao (Chinese official) page as an MCR primer.

3. OMS — simplified scoring for beginners

OMS (Original Mahjong System) is an earlier simplified scoring system popular in the Netherlands and Germany. It strips the fan table down so Western beginners can play without memorising 81 patterns. Details vary by club/association — check your local rules.

4. Riichi in Europe

Japanese riichi has a large European following and many open tournaments, alongside MCR. Its gate is yaku (no yaku, no win); its core is riichi, furiten, dora and defence. See Japanese riichi in this series.

5. How to start

Pick a lane: fan-building → MCR; speed and defence → riichi. MCR: memorise common patterns, verify with a score tool, then play. Riichi: practise tile efficiency, then tenpai and defence. At a club, just ask: 'MCR or OMS?'

Practice checklist

  1. Choose MCR or riichi and stick to one while learning.
  2. MCR: treat the 8-fan minimum as a hard gate on every hand.
  3. Riichi: lock in 'no yaku, no win', then learn riichi, ippatsu and tanyao.
  4. Use a fan-scoring tool instead of memorising the whole table.
  5. Check your national association's rules for OMS/MCR specifics.
