Singapore & Malaysia Mahjong: Flowers and Animal Tiles

Singapore/Malaysia mahjong carries Hokkien/Cantonese roots: flowers are common, some tables add animal tiles, and rules vary widely — the classic 'ask first' region.

About rule differences Overseas variants are defined by associations, clubs or the table itself. This page gives the mainstream version to build a frame and read the jargon; in a real game or tournament, the official or table rules win.

1. Roots

Brought by Hokkien and Cantonese migrants, the game follows Hokkien/Cantonese lines: flowers, fan/point scoring. Rules are strict within a community and vary between communities.

2. Flowers and animal tiles

Flowers are common; exchanging and scoring them is routine. Some sets add animal tiles (cat, mouse, rooster, centipede and others) — a local extra whose play and scoring vary by set; follow the table. If animal tiles appear, ask whether they can be claimed and how they score.

3. Table-defined rules

Different communities in the same city may play entirely different versions. There is no single rulebook to memorise for the region.

4. Compared with Hokkien and Cantonese

The fan logic is closest to our Hokkien and Cantonese pages. The difference is mainly the local extras (flowers/animal tiles).

5. Three questions to ask

① How many tiles (13 or 16); ② flowers / animal tiles; ③ the fan/point minimum. Nail these three and settlement goes smoothly.

Practice checklist

  1. Confirm 13-tile or 16-tile before practising.
  2. Where flowers are heavy, memorise them at the start.
  3. For animal tiles, ask 'can they be claimed, how do they score?' first.
  4. Compare with the Hokkien/Cantonese pages for the local fan gate.
  5. Memorise the three questions: tiles, flowers/animals, minimum fan.
