Where to Play Mahjong Online Abroad

Pick the platform by system first, then by five criteria. This page groups English-language options by system and adds an avoid-list (including staying clear of gambling sites).

About rule differences Overseas variants are defined by associations, clubs or the table itself. This page gives the mainstream version to build a frame and read the jargon; in a real game or tournament, the official or table rules win.

1. System first

Are you playing riichi, MCR or American (NMJL)? Their platforms barely overlap. Don't look for MCR or American mahjong on Chinese-facing apps — those live in their own English/association ecosystems.

2. Riichi clients

Long-running online riichi (such as Tenhou) and newer English-UI clients (such as Mahjong Soul and Riichi City) support English. They offer unified rules and large ranked pools — ideal for learning riichi. Download/register via official channels; platforms change, so follow the official source.

3. MCR / competition

MCR runs mainly through associations and tournaments; public online rooms are rare. Practically, join an association/club and use their designated platform.

4. American mahjong

NMJL mahjong is less online; mostly apps and community games, strictly by the current year's card. If playing an app, confirm it uses the current card, or rules won't match.

5. Five criteria + avoid-list

Five criteria: latency / ruleset version / rank spread / community / anti-cheat. Avoid: use official channels only. Any platform where you 'top up for chips and cash out' may be gambling — stay away. Learn the English UI with our terminology sheet before playing.

Practice checklist

  1. Choose a system, then download its platform.
  2. Riichi beginners: start in the lowest rank, 5–10 games a day.
  3. For MCR, ask a club which platform they use.
  4. For American mahjong apps, confirm the current card.
  5. Exit and report any 'top up and cash out' platform.
