European OMS: Simplified Scoring and Club Play

OMS (Original Mahjong System) is a simplified scoring system developed for beginners in Europe (especially the Netherlands and Germany) — play at a club without memorising 81 fan first.

About rule differences Overseas variants are defined by associations, clubs or the table itself. This page gives the mainstream version to build a frame and read the jargon; in a real game or tournament, the official or table rules win.

1. What OMS is

OMS is a simplified scoring system built in Europe to lower the bar of Chinese fan play. It is popular in Dutch and German clubs, letting beginners play before mastering scoring. Details vary by club — follow your club's rules.

2. Simplified scoring vs 81 fan

Chinese official (MCR) has 81 patterns and an 8-fan minimum; the gate is memorising fan. OMS trims scoring so you can win and settle without mastering the fan table. The trade-off is less competitive precision — OMS is beginner/club-oriented, not a tournament rule set.

3. Club culture

European clubs centre on the two competitive disciplines MCR and riichi; OMS is often the on-ramp. Many clubs 'teach OMS, then move to MCR or riichi'. At a club, ask: 'OMS today, or MCR/riichi?'

4. Choosing OMS, MCR or riichi

Play quickly, casually → OMS. Practise fan and compete → MCR (the Chinese official rules; see our Guobiao page). Practise speed and defence → riichi (see Japanese riichi).

5. Getting started

Start with OMS: learn basic winning shapes, play with simplified scoring, then decide about MCR. MCR: memorise common patterns, verify with a score tool, play bots. Riichi: drill tile efficiency, then learn defence.

Practice checklist

  1. At a club, ask which system is being played today.
  2. Treat OMS as a ramp: play first, decide about 81 fan later.
  3. For MCR, treat the 8-fan minimum as a hard gate.
  4. For riichi, lock in 'no yaku, no win'.
  5. Use a fan tool instead of rote memorisation.
